May Teacher Spotlight - 1st Grade Team!

For the May teacher spotlight we are celebrating the first grade team - Ms. Kinder, Mrs. Budd and Mrs. Schichtel! These teachers have been working on integrating STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) skills with literacy in their STEM fairy tale projects.

In the project highlighted below, the classes first read and discussed the fairy tale "Billy Goats Gruff". Then the students were tasked with working in teams to design and build a bridge that could carry the weight of a toy goat attached to a magnet. The students worked in teams to first design a plan for their bridge. They then built their bridges using mini-marshmallows and toothpicks. The students had to work together, listen to each other, test their theories, tweak their designs and document the process with their iPads. The students then put the videos and photos together in iMovie and added text and music. These presentations were shared with the class so the students could see each others designs.

In watching these students build their bridges, there was much collaboration and creativity. Engagement was high and each group created a unique bridge design.

I like the projects because you can let out your artistic side and it is fun working with people and making a plan." Lyla Sanborn - 1st Grade Student

Ms. Kinder said of the project, "Our fairy tale STEM projects have been a fantastic addition to our daily routine.  The kids are having fun and are so engaged!  It is awesome watching students work together as a  team to problem solve and follow specific steps.  There is so much going on: the students have to share, discuss, and compromise when they don’t agree.  The projects definitely have a “real world” element that is quite valuable.  The incorporation of the iMovie app has made this particular project even more exciting for the kids.  This has definitely been a great way to end the year!"

Check out the students' videos and pictures below. Great job first graders!!
