What is IXL?

IXL is an online tool used to support students with math and language arts instruction and practice in grades K-12. Glen Lake Community Schools pays an annual subscription fee for this program. It allows teachers to monitor student achievement based on the standards in these subjects and target individual student needs by assigning practice within a specific standard. Teachers are able to generate a variety of progress reports and students earn "medals" as they progress through the program. Both students and teachers have provided positive feedback on the program and we are excited to watch the usage grow each year. IXL is web-based so it can be accessed on any device from both school and home via the Internet. There is also an app available for the program.

To date, through this current school year, Glen Lake students have attempted 743,791 problems and spent 4,746 hours working within the IXL program! Specifically in the middle school grades, IXL is used for remediation of specific skill areas as identified through the student's NWEA test scores. Here is what two 7th grade students had to say about the program:

“It (IXL) gives us instant feedback and explains to us how to do the problem if we get it wrong and that’s very helpful.” 7th Grade Math Student

“It (IXL) teaches you, and you get what you did back, and you learn from your mistakes.” 7th Grade Math Student

Mrs. Robinson says of of the program, "I use IXL in my classroom as an alternative to worksheets.  IXL is great because it gives immediate feedback to the students. If they are wrong it also provides them a full description of how to do the problem correctly.  Students are able to learn from their mistakes and they do not have to wait for a paper to be graded. This provides more immediate feedback.  IXL is great for wrote practice and word problems. but it does not replace the group work and learning that takes place in the classroom."

If you have students that will be in 1st-12th grade next year, ask them or their teacher for their IXL account information so they can keep practicing over the summer! You can also contact Katri O'Neill at oneillk@glenlake.k12.mi.us for IXL student login information.
